EOM Payment Terms: What "End of Month" Means on an Invoice

EOM means "end of month". In a term such as "30 days EOM" it moves the start of the payment period from the invoice date to the last day of the invoice month: an invoice dated 15 January 2026 on 30 days EOM is due on 2 March 2026. A second way of counting gives 28 February 2026, and "EOM" on its own is read in more than one way, so the safest invoice prints the exact due date.

What EOM means on an invoice

  • N days EOM / Net N EOM (for example "30 days EOM", "Net 10 EOM"): the N days start at the end of the month in which the invoice is dated.
  • Net EOM or EOM on its own: read literally, the full amount is due by the end of the invoice month (15 January 2026 → 31 January 2026).
  • Prox terms ("10th prox", "25th prox"): due on that day of the next month. See prox and day-of-month terms.

Dictionaries do not all read "EOM" alone the literal way. The Cambridge Business English Dictionary defines it as end-of-month dating:

abbreviation for end-of-month dating: used to show that a bill must be paid 30 days after the last day of the month that follows. For example, a bill with an EOM date of 26 April must be paid by 30 June.
— Cambridge Business English Dictionary, "EOM". Source · checked .

The same dictionary defines "net 30 EOM" as "written on an invoice to show that it must be paid within 30 days of the beginning of the following month" (source). Because the letters carry different readings, agree the meaning with your customer and write the date on the invoice.

Two ways to count "N days end of month"

  1. Method 1: end of the invoice month + N days. 30 days EOM on 15 January 2026: 31 January 2026 + 30 days = 2 March 2026 (Monday).
  2. Method 2: invoice date + N days, then to the end of that month. 15 January 2026 + 30 days = 14 February 2026, then the end of that month = 28 February 2026 (Saturday).

Both methods appear in an official French text on "45 jours fin de mois" (45 days end of month), a ministerial answer published in the Journal officiel:

Le mode de computation du délai de 45 jours fin de mois n'est pas imposé par la loi. Les opérateurs ont ainsi la liberté de le calculer de deux manières : soit en ajoutant 45 jours à la fin du mois d'émission de la facture, soit en ajoutant 45 jours à la date d'émission puis en allant jusqu'à la fin du mois. Le mode de calcul retenu doit toutefois être convenu au préalable entre les partenaires commerciaux afin d'éviter toute ambiguïté.

Our translation: The law does not impose a way of counting the 45 days end of month period. Businesses are therefore free to calculate it in two ways: either by adding 45 days to the end of the month in which the invoice is issued, or by adding 45 days to the date of issue and then going to the end of that month. The method chosen must, however, be agreed in advance between the trading partners to avoid any ambiguity.

— Assemblée nationale, written answer to question no. 63277 (14th legislature), JO 6 October 2015, p. 7590. Assemblée nationale · verified . A ministerial answer, not a statute, and it covers only 45 days end of month under French law.

This is French guidance about a 45-day term, not a rule for US or UK invoices; the arithmetic of the two readings is the same for any number of days. French law itself caps agreed terms at 60 days from the invoice date, or 45 days end of month if expressly stipulated in the contract and not a manifest abuse: see 45 days EOM.

EOM terms side by side

Days after the invoice date under either method, and the due date for an invoice dated 15 January 2026.

TermDays after the invoice dateMethod 1Method 2
EOM / net EOM (literal reading) 0 to 30 31 January 2026 31 January 2026
Net 10 EOM 10 to 40 10 February 2026 31 January 2026
30 Days EOM 30 to 60 2 March 2026 28 February 2026
45 Days EOM 45 to 75 17 March 2026 31 March 2026
60 Days EOM 60 to 90 1 April 2026 31 March 2026
90 Days EOM 90 to 120 1 May 2026 30 April 2026

The shortest case is an invoice dated on the last day of a month; the longest is one dated on the 1st of a 31-day month.

EOM vs Net 30

Net 30 counts 30 days from each invoice date, so invoices dated 3 March 2026 and 28 March 2026 are due on 2 April 2026 and 27 April 2026. On 30 days EOM both are due on 30 April 2026 (method 1), because both count from 31 March 2026. Under method 1, EOM terms group a month's invoices onto one due date; Net terms give each invoice its own. The full comparison is on the 30 days EOM page.

Prox and day-of-month terms

"Prox" is short for proximo, which Dictionary.com defines as:

in, of, or during the next month.
— Dictionary.com, "proximo". Source · checked .
  • 25th prox on an invoice dated 10 March 2026 → 25 April 2026 (Saturday).
  • 10th prox on an invoice dated 20 March 2026 → 10 April 2026 (Friday). Counted from the end of the month, this is the same date as Net 10 EOM.
  • "Net 20th" names a day of the month rather than a number of days. Read with "prox" it means the 20th of the next month (10 March 2026 → 20 April 2026); without it, the words do not say which month, so print the date.

Spreadsheet (invoice date in A2): day D of the next month is =EOMONTH(A2,0)+D, as long as the next month has a day D.

EOM formulas for Excel and Google Sheets

Invoice date in cell A2, N = the number of days (format the result as a date):

  • Method 1: =EOMONTH(A2,0)+N (for example =EOMONTH(A2,0)+30)
  • Method 2: =EOMONTH(A2+N,0)
  • End of the invoice month (net EOM, literal reading): =EOMONTH(A2,0)

EOMONTH "Returns the serial number for the last day of the month that is the indicated number of months before or after start_date" (Microsoft Support). In Google Sheets it "Returns a date representing the last day of a month which falls a specified number of months before or after another date", with the same syntax EOMONTH(start_date, months) (Google Docs Editors Help). How to write EOM terms on an invoice

Always follow the term with the date it produces. Replace [due date] with your date:

  • Payment terms: 30 days EOM (30 days after the end of the invoice month). Due date: [due date].
  • Terms: Net EOM. Payment is due by the last day of the invoice month, [due date].
  • Terms: 10th prox. Payment is due on the 10th of the month after the invoice month: [due date].

Each EOM term page has more lines: Net 10 EOM, 30 days EOM, 45 days EOM, 60 days EOM, 90 days EOM.

Putting EOM terms on an invoice with our generator

EOM payment terms FAQ

What does EOM mean in accounting?

EOM stands for "end of month". In payment terms it moves the start of the payment period to the end of the month in which the invoice is dated: "30 days EOM" on an invoice dated 15 January 2026 is due on 2 March 2026, counting from the last day of the month. The Cambridge Business English Dictionary defines "EOM" on its own as end-of-month dating, "used to show that a bill must be paid 30 days after the last day of the month that follows", so the same letters can be read in more than one way. Print the due date on the invoice.

What does net EOM mean?

Read literally, "net EOM" means the full (net) amount is due at the end of the month in which the invoice is dated: an invoice dated 15 January 2026 would be due on 31 January 2026. We have not found a dictionary or official definition of "net EOM" on its own, and "EOM" alone is defined differently by the Cambridge Business English Dictionary, so agree the meaning with your customer and write the date.

What does prox mean on an invoice?

"Prox" is short for proximo, which Dictionary.com defines as "in, of, or during the next month". "10th prox" therefore means the 10th of the month after the invoice month: an invoice dated 20 March 2026 is due on 10 April 2026.

Which EOM counting method is correct?

Neither is imposed everywhere. A French ministerial answer on "45 jours fin de mois" says the law does not impose a counting method and that the parties should agree one in advance; that is French guidance, and we have found no official source that settles the question for other countries. Agree the method with your customer and print the resulting date.
